Last September, I developed Arena Shooter, a top-down shooter game, to test my game developing skills.
In Arena Shooter, the player controls a white square shoots or attacks various enemies with an ever growing arsenal of weapons. The waves of enemies grow increasingly difficult, becoming more numerous and stronger. To survive, the player is able to upgrade stats, purchase power ups, and upgrade weapons in the shop by using coins dropped from the enemies. As one of the founders of the Game Development Club, I noticed that many people in my friend group wanted to learn game design and programming but didn’t know where to start. Fortunately, game programming was something that I had taught myself for years and I felt that I could help my peers avoid the many pitfalls I had fallen into when I just started developing games. Furthermore, I believe that, through the club, I could share resources that I found helpful to others interested and guide their game development journey; hence I, along with others, decided to form this club.
After some polishing, I thought Arena Shooter would be a perfect game to demonstrate the possibilities of game development at my club’s fair booth. Although it still has room for improvement and more content, the project has now been tabled in favour of Game Development Club’s other on-going projects, such as creating a detailed Roblox model of the Senior School’s Great Hall. Nevertheless, Arena Shooter continues to showcase to both current and future club members the infinite possibilities game development offers.
